Celsius to Fahrenheit

Convert celsius to fahrenheit — type any value and get the answer instantly.

The formula

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32, and back the other way °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.

Unlike most conversions this one is not a simple multiplication, because the two scales do not share a zero. That offset is what makes it awkward to do in your head and why it is worth having a box for.

A shortcut that works

Double the Celsius figure and add 30. It is high by a few degrees but instant: 20 °C → 70 (true 68), 30 °C → 90 (true 86). Good enough for weather, not for an oven.

Reference points worth knowing

Ovens are the common case

Recipes cross the Atlantic constantly, and oven conversions are traditionally rounded to convenient numbers: 160 °C is quoted as 325 °F, 180 °C as 350 °F, 200 °C as 400 °F. If your oven is fan-assisted, subtract about 20 °C from any conventional figure before converting.

Weather, and why the two feel so different

Fahrenheit spreads everyday outdoor temperatures across a wider range, so a degree is a smaller change — which is why people raised on it describe the weather in whole numbers and find Celsius coarse. Celsius anchors on water freezing and boiling, which is more useful for cooking and science and less intuitive for deciding on a coat. Neither is objectively better; they were built for different questions.

Other units

The box also handles Kelvin — try 25 c to k — along with weight, length, area, volume, speed and data.

Common questions

How do I type a conversion?

Plainly: 70 kg to lbs, 5 ft in cm, 180 c to f. Abbreviations and full names both work.

Is a kilobyte 1000 or 1024 bytes?

1,024 here, matching operating systems. Drive makers use 1,000, which is why a 1 TB disk shows as 931 GB.

Why is temperature different?

The scales do not share a zero, so it is a multiplication and an offset rather than a simple factor.

Can it convert kg to metres?

No — those measure different things, so it explains rather than returning a meaningless number.

Is it accurate?

Conversions use exact defined factors where they exist: an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, a pound exactly 0.45359237 kg.
