    Built for upload limits

Application forms are unforgiving about photo size. "Maximum 50 KB", "between 20 KB and 100 KB", "photo must not exceed 200 KB" — and the form will not tell you which part failed, it will just refuse. This tool takes the number the form gave you and gets under it.

It runs in your browser. Your photo is drawn to a canvas, encoded at a series of quality settings, and measured after each one, using a binary search to find the highest quality that still fits your limit. If quality alone is not enough, it reduces the dimensions in steps and searches again.

    Quality first, then size

The order matters. Dropping resolution too early makes a photo look soft when a quality reduction alone would have been invisible. So the search exhausts the quality range at full resolution before touching dimensions, and tells you afterwards if it had to scale — you are never left wondering why the picture looks different.

If your form also specifies dimensions in pixels, turn on "never shrink the image" and the tool will keep them, or refuse and tell you rather than silently resizing.

PNG and why we switch to JPEG

PNG is lossless, which means it has no quality dial to turn. A PNG photograph asked to reach 50 KB usually cannot get there while staying a PNG. When you leave the format as "same", a PNG photo is converted to JPEG, because that is the only way to hit a small target. If you need PNG specifically — a logo, a screenshot with sharp text, anything with transparency — pick it explicitly and we will keep it.

    Specific forms

For passport and exam photos with fixed dimensions as well as a size cap, the passport photo tool does both at once. For scanned signatures, which usually need a small pixel size and a 10–50 KB limit, use the signature resizer.

    Common questions

    Does my photo get uploaded?

No. The whole process runs in your browser using a canvas, so the image never leaves your device.

What if it cannot reach my target?

You are told, with the smallest size achieved. We never hand back a file that misses the limit you needed.

Will it change my image dimensions?

Only if quality reduction alone cannot reach the target, and it tells you when it does. Turn on "never shrink" to forbid it entirely.

Why did my PNG become a JPG?

PNG is lossless and has no quality setting, so it usually cannot hit a small target. Choose PNG explicitly to keep it.

    Is there a minimum size?

You can ask for as little as 2 KB, but below roughly 10 KB most photographs stop being recognisable.

Can I do several photos at once?

This tool takes one at a time so each gets its own search. For batches at a fixed quality, use the bulk compressor.
