What this gives you, honestly
You get editable text and rebuilt tables in a real .docx file. You do not get a pixel-perfect clone of the original layout, and no free tool that claims otherwise is telling you the truth.
The reason is structural. A PDF does not contain paragraphs, headings or tables — it contains instructions to draw glyphs at coordinates. Converting back to Word means inferring the document's structure from where things sit on the page. That inference is good on ordinary documents and imperfect on complex ones, and we would rather say so here than have you discover it after downloading.
What converts well
Reports, letters, articles, contracts, CVs — anything that is mostly flowing text in a single column comes across cleanly, with paragraphs preserved and headings detected. Bordered tables are rebuilt as real Word tables you can edit cell by cell.
What converts badly
Multi-column magazine layouts, heavy graphic design, forms with boxes drawn as artwork, and tables without ruled lines. In those cases the text is all there but the arrangement will need work. If you only want the words, PDF to Text is faster and cleaner.
Scanned PDFs
If your PDF is a photograph of paper, there is no text to extract — only pixels. This tool will tell you that instead of returning an empty document. Scans need OCR first, which recognises the characters in the image.
How to check the result quickly
Open the .docx and turn on formatting marks. If paragraphs are broken at every line, the original PDF was laid out line by line rather than as flowing text, and a find-and-replace on line breaks will tidy it in seconds.
Common questions
Will the layout look exactly like the PDF?
No, and be sceptical of any free tool that promises it. You get editable text and rebuilt tables, not a pixel-perfect copy.
Does it work on scanned documents?
Not directly — a scan contains no text, only an image of text. The tool tells you when it finds no text layer rather than returning an empty file.
Are tables preserved?
Bordered tables are rebuilt as editable Word tables. Tables laid out with spacing rather than lines usually are not detected.
Is there a page limit?
Files up to 100 MB. Very long documents take longer but are not refused.
Do you keep my document?
No. It is processed in an isolated directory and deleted as soon as the download is sent.
Can I convert back afterwards?
Yes — Word to PDF handles the return trip and keeps the layout, because that direction is the easy one.
