For example 1-3, 5, 8- — each range becomes its own file.
Only if the PDF is protected.

Ranges, and what each one produces

The pages field takes a comma-separated list, and each comma-separated part becomes its own output file. That is the detail worth knowing: 1-3, 4-6 gives you two PDFs, while 1-6 gives you one. A trailing dash means "to the end", so 8- takes everything from page eight onward.

When several ranges are given you get a zip containing each as a separate document. A single range returns a single PDF directly.

    Why people split

Usually because something downstream will not accept the whole thing. Upload forms cap file size; email attachments bounce; a colleague needs one chapter rather than a 200-page report. Splitting is also the standard escape route when a document cannot be compressed under a portal's limit — three files of 90 KB often succeed where one of 270 KB fails.

    Nothing is re-rendered

Pages are copied as objects into the new document. Text stays selectable, links keep working, images are untouched, and the pages are byte-for-byte what they were. Splitting never degrades a document.

    Sizes will not divide evenly

A 10 MB PDF split into two does not give two 5 MB files. Weight follows content: a chapter full of scanned images may be most of the file, and a chapter of plain text almost none of it. If you are splitting to get under a limit, check the parts rather than assuming.

    Protected files

An encrypted PDF cannot be split until it is opened, so supply the password in the field provided, or remove it first. The password is used and discarded, never stored.

    The reverse

Merge PDF puts documents back together, and runs entirely in your browser.

    Common questions

How do I split into separate files?

Give several ranges separated by commas — 1-3, 4-6 produces two files, returned as a zip.

    What does 8- mean?

Page eight to the end of the document.

    Will splitting reduce quality?

No. Pages are copied as objects, so text stays selectable and images are untouched.

Will each half be half the size?

Rarely. File size follows content — scanned pages are heavy, text pages are light.

    Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you supply the password. It is used to open the file and never stored.

    Is there a page limit?

Up to 3,000 pages per document.
