    Working backwards from the number

Discord caps free uploads at 10 MB. WhatsApp stops around 16 MB. Email attachments usually die at 25 MB. Every one of those is a hard number, and "medium quality" is no help against a hard number.

So this does the arithmetic instead of guessing. File size is bitrate multiplied by duration, which rearranges: take your target, subtract the audio budget, divide the remainder by the video's length, and you have the bitrate that lands on the number. The video is then encoded in two passes — the first measures the material, the second spends the bitrate where it is needed — which is what makes the result actually hit the target rather than drift past it.

Why it may reduce the resolution

Bitrate is spread across pixels. 500 kbps at 1080p looks far worse than the same 500 kbps at 480p, because each pixel gets a quarter as much data. So on "auto" the resolution is matched to the bitrate the target allows — a small target on a long video drops to 480p or 360p deliberately, and the result is markedly better than a blurry 1080p.

Pin the resolution yourself if you would rather keep it and accept the artefacts.

    When the number is impossible

Some targets cannot be met. Forty minutes of video will not fit in 10 MB at any watchable quality, and rather than spending five minutes producing something unusable, the tool works out the bitrate first and refuses with the actual figure — telling you the minimum size that would work. Trimming the clip is almost always the better answer.

    Length limits

Up to fifteen minutes of source. That is a genuine constraint rather than a preference: transcoding runs on a request that has a fixed lifetime, and a longer video would be cut off partway through. Trim first if yours is longer.

    Common questions

What size do I need for Discord?

10 MB on the free tier, 50 MB with Nitro Basic. WhatsApp is around 16 MB and most email limits are 25 MB.

Why did it reduce my resolution?

Bitrate spread over fewer pixels looks better. A small target at 1080p is blurrier than the same target at 480p.

Will it hit the size exactly?

It lands just under, using two-pass encoding. If the target is arithmetically impossible you are told before any encoding happens.

How long can my video be?

Fifteen minutes. Transcoding runs inside a request with a fixed lifetime, so longer videos have to be trimmed first.

Can I keep the audio quality?

Audio is fixed at 96 kbps to leave the budget for video. Remove it entirely with the compress tool if you do not need it.

    Is my video stored?

No. It is deleted as soon as your download has been sent.
