Why convert DOC to PDF?
DOC is the old binary Word format from before 2007. Plenty of institutions still circulate it, and plenty of modern software now opens it badly or not at all — which is exactly why converting it to PDF is worth doing before the format becomes someone else's problem.
What to watch for
Old DOC files often carry formatting quirks from whichever version created them. Simple documents convert cleanly; heavily formatted ones from the 1990s occasionally shift.
If the file matters, this is also a good moment to keep the PDF as your archival copy. DOC support is only going to get worse.
How the conversion works
Your file is converted by headless LibreOffice — the same engine behind the desktop suite, so what it produces matches what Microsoft Word 97–2003 would show. It runs on our server because there is no browser equivalent: rendering a document faithfully needs the full layout engine, fonts and all.
Your file is processed in a directory created for that one job and deleted the moment your download has been sent. Nothing is logged, nothing is retained, and there is no account to create.
Archival PDF/A
If the document is going into a records system, a legal filing or any archive meant to outlive the software that made it, turn on PDF/A. It embeds every font and forbids anything that could make the file render differently in twenty years. The file gets larger — that is precisely what you are paying for.
Going the other way
Converting back out of PDF is a much harder problem, because a PDF has no paragraphs or cells to recover — only glyphs at coordinates. PDF to Word and PDF to Excel do their best at it, and are honest about where the guesswork shows.
Common questions
Will my formatting be preserved?
Yes in almost all cases. The main risk is an unusual font being substituted, which can shift line breaks slightly.
Which formats are accepted?
DOCX, DOC, ODT and RTF.
Are hyperlinks kept?
Yes, both external links and internal ones such as a table of contents.
What is PDF/A and do I need it?
An archival format that embeds everything needed to render the file identically in future. Use it for legal or records filing; otherwise it just makes the file bigger.
Do tracked changes appear?
No. As with exporting from Word, the document prints in its final state.
Is there a size limit?
100 MB per document.
