    Spreadsheet in, structured data out

Drop in an .xlsx, .xls or .ods file and get JSON — an array of objects keyed by your column headers, which is the shape almost every API and script expects. Or choose CSV if the destination wants a flat file.

The whole thing runs in your browser. That matters here more than for most conversions, because spreadsheets are where organisations keep customer lists, payroll and pricing, and uploading one to a stranger's server to reformat it is a genuinely bad idea.

    Multiple sheets

Workbooks usually have several. Set the sheet number to pick one; the result tells you which sheet it read and how many there were, so you can check you got the one you meant.

Values are kept as they display

This is the decision that matters most. Cell values are taken as formatted rather than raw, which keeps leading zeros on postcodes and IDs, keeps dates as the strings you can see, and stops long numbers being converted into scientific notation.

The alternative — reading raw values — is how 007 becomes 7 and a 16-digit reference number turns into 1.23457E+15. Excel's own CSV export does this, which is why so many exported IDs arrive damaged.

    Formulas

You get the calculated result, not the formula. JSON has no concept of a formula, so the value is what travels.

    What does not come across

Formatting, colours, merged cells, charts, images and comments. JSON carries data, not presentation. Merged cells in particular produce a value in the first cell and blanks in the rest, which is worth knowing if your headers are merged.

    The other direction

JSON to CSV converts back, and CSV to JSON handles files that are already flat.

    Common questions

    Is my spreadsheet uploaded?

No. It is parsed in your browser — which matters, since spreadsheets often hold customer or payroll data.

    Why are numbers strings?

Values are read as displayed, which keeps leading zeros on IDs and stops long numbers becoming scientific notation.

    Can I pick a sheet?

Yes. Set the sheet number; the result reports which one it read and how many exist.

    What happens to formulas?

You get the calculated result. JSON has no way to represent a formula.

    Are merged cells handled?

The value lands in the first cell and the rest are blank, which is worth checking if your headers are merged.

    Which formats work?

    XLSX, XLS and ODS.
