Choosing the right format
Format choice is not decoration; it decides file size, quality and whether the file opens at all on the other end.
- JPEG — photographs. Universal support, no transparency, lossy.
- PNG — screenshots, logos, diagrams, anything with sharp edges or transparency. Lossless, and much larger for photographs.
- WebP — a good default for the web: smaller than both, with transparency and universal browser support.
- AVIF — smallest of all, slower to encode, support outside browsers still patchy.
- TIFF — scanning, printing and archives. Lossless and heavy.
- GIF — limited to 256 colours; fine for simple graphics, poor for photographs.
The transparency trap
JPEG cannot store transparency. Convert a transparent PNG to JPEG without thinking and the transparent regions become black, which is the single most common surprise in image conversion. This tool fills them with a background colour you choose, defaulting to white. If you need the transparency kept, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
Converting does not recover quality
Turning a heavily compressed JPEG into a PNG produces a lossless copy of a lossy image. The file grows, the artefacts stay. Conversion changes the container, never the content that was already discarded.
Batches
Up to thirty images at once, returned as a zip — the usual case being a camera folder that needs to become something a website accepts.
It runs on your device
Decoding and re-encoding happen in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there is no queue. That also means there is no daily cap and no account — the work costs us nothing, so there is nothing to ration.
HEIC from an iPhone
HEIC files are the most common reason people arrive at a converter at all: an iPhone saves them by default, and a great many upload forms, Windows installs and older editors simply refuse them. Converting to JPEG makes the photograph work everywhere, at no visible cost.
Common questions
Which format should I pick?
JPEG for photos, PNG for screenshots and logos, WebP as a smaller general-purpose choice for the web.
Why did my transparent background turn white?
JPEG cannot store transparency, so it is filled with your chosen background colour. Convert to PNG or WebP to keep it.
Will converting to PNG improve my JPEG?
No. You get a lossless copy of an already-lossy image — larger file, same artefacts.
How many images at once?
Up to thirty per batch, returned as a zip.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Conversion happens in your browser.
