Lorem ipsum generator
Generate placeholder text by paragraphs, sentences or words.
Placeholder text, by the paragraph
Choose paragraphs, sentences or words, set how many, and copy the result. The output is deterministic — the same settings always produce the same text, which matters when you are comparing two versions of a layout and do not want the copy changing underneath you.
Why nonsense Latin rather than real words
Lorem ipsum is deliberately meaningless so that nobody reads it. Fill a mockup with real sentences and reviewers discuss the wording instead of the layout; fill it with lorem ipsum and they look at the design, which is what you asked them to do.
The text itself is a scrambled passage from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC, which has been used by typesetters since at least the 1500s. The scrambling is the point — it has roughly the letter distribution and word length of real Latin prose, so it looks like text without being readable as text.
Where it goes wrong
Latin has different average word lengths from English and no long compound words at all. A design that fits perfectly in lorem ipsum can break in German, where a single word can be forty characters. If the layout will carry real content, test with real content before signing it off — placeholder text has a habit of making everything look fine.
And the classic failure: placeholder text shipped to production. It has happened to newspapers, banks and government sites. Search for "lorem" before you deploy.
How much to generate
A paragraph of body copy is usually three to five sentences. A blog post is six to ten paragraphs. A meta description is around 155 characters. Generating roughly what the real content will be is more useful than filling the space.

Common questions
Why is the text always the same?
Deliberately. Comparing two layout versions is impossible if the copy changes between them.
Where does lorem ipsum come from?
A scrambled passage of Cicero's De finibus, written in 45 BC and used by typesetters since the 1500s.
Why not use real text?
Reviewers read real text and comment on the wording instead of the layout. Meaningless text keeps attention on the design.
Is it safe for production?
No — check for it before deploying. Placeholder text reaching live sites is a genuinely common embarrassment.
How much should I generate?
Roughly what the real content will be. Three to five sentences per paragraph is typical for body copy.
