Markdown to HTML converter

Convert Markdown into HTML, or HTML back into Markdown.

Runs in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere.

Markdown into HTML

Paste Markdown and get the HTML it produces. Headings, emphasis, links, images, lists, blockquotes, code blocks, tables and horizontal rules are all supported, using GitHub Flavored Markdown — the dialect almost everything uses in practice.

Line breaks are treated as line breaks, which is what people expect and what strict Markdown does not do. In the original specification a single newline is just a space, and you need two trailing spaces to force a break — a rule that has confused writers for twenty years.

What GFM adds

Tables, strikethrough with ~~text~~, task lists with - [ ], and automatic linking of bare URLs. None of these are in the original Markdown; all of them are now expected.

A note on raw HTML

Markdown permits raw HTML inside it, which means Markdown from an untrusted source can carry a script tag. The output here is what the parser produces — if you are going to render Markdown that other people wrote, sanitise it on your side before putting it in a page. That is true of every Markdown parser, and it is worth saying plainly rather than leaving implied.

Going the other way

Switch the direction and HTML is converted back to Markdown. That half is lossy, because HTML can express far more than Markdown can — styling, layout and nested structures have no equivalent and are dropped, leaving the text content in reading order.

Where this gets used

Previewing a README before pushing it, moving content into a CMS that wants HTML, generating email bodies, and checking how a documentation page will actually render.

Nothing is uploaded

Conversion happens entirely in your browser.

Common questions

Which Markdown dialect?

GitHub Flavored Markdown — tables, strikethrough, task lists and autolinking included.

Why do my single line breaks become breaks?

That is deliberate. Strict Markdown treats a single newline as a space, which almost nobody expects.

Is the HTML safe to publish?

Markdown allows raw HTML, so Markdown from someone else can contain scripts. Sanitise before rendering untrusted input.

Can it convert HTML back?

Yes, but lossily — styling and layout have no Markdown equivalent and are dropped.

Is my text uploaded?

No, it is converted in your browser.
