When a form asks for kilobytes

Photo upload fields are unforgiving and unhelpful in equal measure. "Maximum 50 KB", "photo must be between 20 KB and 100 KB" — and when it fails, the form usually just says no, without telling you which rule you broke.

This works backwards from your number instead of guessing. Your image is encoded at a series of quality settings and measured after each one, using a binary search to find the highest quality that still fits. If quality alone is not enough, the dimensions are reduced in steps and the search runs again.

    Quality is spent before pixels

The order is deliberate. Shrinking a photo too early makes it look soft when a quality reduction alone would have been invisible. So the full quality range is exhausted at the original dimensions first, and you are told afterwards if scaling was needed — no silent resizing.

If the form also specifies pixel dimensions, switch on "never shrink the image". The tool will then either hit your target at those dimensions or tell you it cannot, which is the useful answer.

    It runs on your device

Everything happens in your browser on a canvas. The photograph is never uploaded, which makes it instant and means an identity document or a passport photo never leaves your phone.

Why a PNG may come back as a JPG

PNG is lossless, so it has no quality dial to turn — a PNG photograph asked to reach 50 KB usually cannot get there and stay a PNG. Left on "same", a PNG photo is converted to JPEG because that is the only way to hit a small target. Choose PNG explicitly if you need transparency or sharp screenshot text.

Fixed dimensions as well as a size

For photos that need an exact pixel size and a KB limit, the passport photo tool does both at once, and the signature resizer handles the smaller dimensions forms set for signatures.

    Common questions

    Does my photo get uploaded?

No. The whole process runs in your browser using a canvas, so the image never leaves your device.

What if it cannot reach my target?

You are told, with the smallest size achieved. We never hand back a file that misses the limit you needed.

Will it change my image dimensions?

Only if quality reduction alone cannot reach the target, and it tells you when it does. Turn on "never shrink" to forbid it entirely.

Why did my PNG become a JPG?

PNG is lossless and has no quality setting, so it usually cannot hit a small target. Choose PNG explicitly to keep it.

    Is there a minimum size?

You can ask for as little as 2 KB, but below roughly 10 KB most photographs stop being recognisable.

Can I do several photos at once?

This tool takes one at a time so each gets its own search. For batches at a fixed quality, use the bulk compressor.
