    What SSC checks

The one-time registration and every SSC application since run the same validation: the photograph must be 3.5 × 4.5 cm, which is 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI, and the JPEG must weigh between 20 and 50 KB. Both ends matter. A 12 KB photograph fails, and it fails with the same unhelpful message as a 2 MB one.

Your signature is a separate upload with completely different numbers — 4.0 × 2.0 cm, which is 140 × 60 pixels, between 10 and 20 KB. Switch the preset above and run it through again.

Why so many SSC photos come back rejected

Three reasons, in order of how often they happen. The photograph is the wrong shape, because a phone camera produces 3:4 or 9:16 and SSC wants 0.778 — cropping is unavoidable, and it should crop from the sides rather than squash the face, which is what this does. The file is under 20 KB, because someone compressed it hard to be safe and went past the floor. And the photograph is older than three months or shows a cap or dark glasses, which no resizer can fix.

The photo is not only for the upload

This is the photograph printed on your admit card and compared against your face at the exam centre. It is worth taking a fresh one against a light plain wall in daylight rather than cropping a group photo, because 413 × 531 is small enough that a heavily enlarged crop looks obviously soft in print. If your original is smaller than 413 × 531 you are warned rather than quietly given a blurred file.

    Signature rules people miss

SSC rejects a signature written in block capitals. It has to be your ordinary running signature, in black or blue ink on plain white paper, scanned or photographed square-on. If the scan has a wide white margin, the trim option in the signature resizer crops to the ink first so the signature itself fills the 140 × 60 frame instead of a border.

    Nothing is uploaded

The whole job runs in your browser. There is no request carrying your photograph anywhere, which you can confirm in the network tab. Given what this file is — your face, attached to an application with your name and date of birth on it — that is the right default.

    Common questions

Why was my photo rejected when it was under the size limit?

Almost always because it was under the minimum instead. SSC asks for 20–50 KB, so a 12 KB photo fails. Portals rarely say which end you missed. This tool checks both.

Does padding the file to reach the minimum damage the photo?

No. The padding is a JPEG comment segment, which is part of the format and is skipped by every decoder. The pixels are bit-for-bit identical to the unpadded version — only the file size changes.

Which preset should I use for NEET?

NTA — passport photo, for the main upload. NEET also asks for a 4 × 6 inch postcard photograph, which has its own page: the postcard photo maker.

Can I use a PNG or a screenshot?

Drop in anything and you get JPG back, which is what UPSC and NTA require. They refuse PNG and PDF outright at the upload step, so converting first is not optional.

My photo is smaller than the required size — is that a problem?

You are told when it happens. The image is enlarged so the portal accepts it, but it will look soft, and it is the same photo that gets printed on your admit card and checked at the exam centre. A higher-resolution original is worth finding.

Does the exam board also require my name and the date on the photo?

NTA does, for NEET and JEE. Several state boards do too. Use the add name and date tool first, then bring the result back here to hit the size window.
