The easy direction
Word to PDF is far more reliable than the reverse, because it is a rendering job rather than a guessing one. Your document already contains explicit paragraphs, styles and tables; producing a PDF just means drawing them. This is why layout survives here and does not always survive coming back.
Conversion runs through headless LibreOffice, which reads .docx, .doc, .odt and .rtf.
Fonts
The one thing that can shift is fonts. If your document uses a typeface the server does not have, LibreOffice substitutes the closest match, and a substituted font has different letter widths — which can push text onto an extra line and, in a tightly laid out document, move a page break.
Standard faces — Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman, Helvetica — are handled. If you have used something unusual and the layout must be exact to the millimetre, exporting to PDF from Word itself will always be the safest route, and we would rather tell you that than have you discover it.
What comes across
Headings, lists, tables, images, headers and footers, page numbering, and internal links all convert. Table-of-contents entries stay clickable. Comments and tracked changes are not printed, matching what Word does when it exports.
PDF/A for archives
Turn on archival PDF/A if the document is going into a records system or a legal filing. PDF/A embeds every font and forbids anything that would make the file render differently in twenty years. The file is larger; that is the point of it.
Common questions
Will my formatting be preserved?
Yes in almost all cases. The main risk is an unusual font being substituted, which can shift line breaks slightly.
Which formats are accepted?
DOCX, DOC, ODT and RTF.
Are hyperlinks kept?
Yes, both external links and internal ones such as a table of contents.
What is PDF/A and do I need it?
An archival format that embeds everything needed to render the file identically in future. Use it for legal or records filing; otherwise it just makes the file bigger.
Do tracked changes appear?
No. As with exporting from Word, the document prints in its final state.
Is there a size limit?
100 MB per document.
