    Text that stays readable

Putting words on a photograph is easy; keeping them legible is the part that goes wrong. A photo is not a flat colour, so text placed over it lands on light areas and dark ones at once.

The outline is what fixes this, and it is why the setting exists. White text with a black outline reads over almost anything — it is the convention in subtitles, memes and news captions for exactly that reason. Three or four pixels of outline is usually enough; more starts to look heavy.

The background bar is the other approach: a semi-transparent panel behind the text, which reads cleanly and looks more deliberate. Better for titles, worse for anything meant to feel spontaneous.

    Sizing by percentage

The size is a percentage of the image width rather than a pixel value, which means the same setting looks right on a phone photo and a full-resolution camera file. A fixed pixel size that suits one is invisible on the other.

    Multiple lines

Line breaks in the text field become line breaks in the image, centred as a block. Keep lines short — text running the full width of a wide photo is genuinely hard to read.

    Fonts

Four families, all using fonts your device already has. Condensed fits more characters per line, which helps when a caption is long and the image is narrow.

    Text is drawn, not overlaid

The caption becomes part of the image's pixels. That means it survives being screenshotted, re-saved and re-shared — which is the point — but it also means it cannot be edited afterwards. Keep the original if the wording might change.

    Common questions

Why does my text disappear on some photos?

It lands on a matching colour. Add an outline — white text with a black outline reads over almost anything.

How thick should the outline be?

Three or four pixels usually. More starts to look heavy.

Why is the size a percentage?

So one setting looks right on both a phone photo and a full-resolution camera file.

    Can I add several lines?

Yes, line breaks in the text become line breaks in the image.

    Which fonts can I use?

Four families using fonts already on your device — sans, serif, mono and condensed.
