Two different blues, for two different documents
"Blue background" means two quite different colours depending on where you are applying. Indonesian pas foto blue is a strong, saturated blue used on KTP-e, KIA, kartu kuning and ASN or PPPK identity cards. The blue asked for by Philippine government agencies, and by several Gulf state visa applications, is a much lighter sky blue. Picking the wrong one is a rejection, so both are separate options rather than one "blue".
What happens at the edge of your hair
Every background changer produces a matte — a map of how much of each pixel is you. At the edges that value is somewhere between fully you and fully background, and those in-between pixels already contain the colour of whatever was really behind you. Composite them straight onto blue and the old room is still faintly there, which is what a fringe or halo actually is.
Here the original background colour is estimated from the pixels that are unambiguously background, then removed from those in-between pixels so what is left is your own colour before it was mixed. It is the difference between a cut-out that looks cut out and one that looks photographed against blue.
Which parity gets blue in Indonesia
Guidance from different offices disagrees about whether an odd or an even birth year takes blue, and it disagrees in both directions. This tool does not decide for you. Follow the instruction printed on the form in front of you.
Size limits
Indonesian portals commonly cap the pas foto at 200 KB, and Philippine agencies vary. The maximum size field finds the highest quality that fits rather than applying a fixed compression setting, so you keep as much detail as the limit allows.
After the background

Which colour does my document need?
Follow the instruction on the form you are filling in. White covers India, the UK, Schengen, the US and Australia; red and blue are Indonesian pas foto colours; sky blue is common in the Philippines and parts of the Gulf.
Is red or blue right for an Indonesian pas foto?
It depends on your birth year, and published sources contradict each other about which parity takes which colour. Both are offered here. Use whichever the form in front of you specifies.
Why does my hair look strange at the edges?
Leave the edge cleaning on — it removes the old background colour from the semi-transparent pixels around hair, which is what causes a halo against a strong colour. It is on by default.
Can I get the background transparent instead?
Yes, but use the background remover for that. This tool exists specifically to produce a solid colour, because that is what document portals require.
Will it work on a photo with a busy background?
Usually, but a plain wall gives a much better cut-out. Furniture, patterned curtains and other people in the frame are what confuses it.
Are my photos kept?
