Used when the background is set to a colour.
PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPEG cannot, so it needs a colour.

    What it does

A segmentation model looks at the image, decides which pixels belong to the subject, and everything else is cut away. You get back a PNG with a transparent background, or the subject placed on a colour of your choosing.

What works, and what does not

The model is strongest on a clear subject against a background that differs from it — a person, a product on a table, an animal, an object photographed for a listing. Those are the cases it was trained on and it handles them well.

It struggles where a human would too: a subject the same colour as what is behind it, heavy motion blur, glass and reflections, chain-link and mesh, and fine strands of hair or fur against a busy background. Wispy hair is the classic hard case for every background remover, paid ones included.

If almost nothing or almost everything gets removed, the result says so rather than handing you a blank file and letting you work it out.

    Edge clean-up

Cleaning up the edges sharpens the boundary, which suits products and hard-edged objects. Turn it off for hair, fur and anything soft — a slightly feathered edge looks more natural there than a crisp one, which tends to read as a cut-out.

    Choosing an output format

PNG keeps transparency and is the right default. WebP also keeps it and produces a smaller file. JPEG cannot store transparency at all, so choosing it fills the background with a colour — the tool does that rather than letting the transparent areas render black, and tells you it has.

    An honest note on resolution

The model analyses a scaled-down copy of the image and the resulting mask is scaled back up to your original dimensions. So the cut-out is applied at full resolution, but the boundary itself was decided at lower detail. On most photographs this is invisible; on very fine edges it is the limit you will run into.

    Your photo is not kept

This runs on our server, because the model is too large to send to a phone. Your image is processed in a directory created for that one job and deleted as soon as the download has been sent.

    Common questions

    Is it free?

Completely, with no watermark and no resolution cap. remove.bg limits free output to 0.25 megapixels; this does not.

Why did it remove the wrong thing?

The model looks for a distinct subject. If the subject and background are similar in colour or the image is blurred, it struggles — as would a person.

    Does it work on hair?

Reasonably, against a plain background. Fine strands against a busy background are the hardest case for every background remover.

    What format should I choose?

PNG to keep transparency, WebP for a smaller file that also keeps it. JPEG cannot store transparency, so it fills the background instead.

    Is my photo stored?

No. It is processed in an isolated directory and deleted as soon as your download is sent.

Can I put a new background behind it?

Choose a colour here, or download the transparent PNG and place it over anything you like in an editor.
