    WhatsApp's limit

WhatsApp caps video at roughly 16 MB for a normal send, which works out at about 90 seconds of ordinary phone footage. Sending as a document raises the ceiling to 2 GB but the recipient gets a file to download rather than a video to tap.

    How this hits it

File size is bitrate multiplied by duration, so the arithmetic runs backwards: take 16 MB, subtract the audio budget, divide the remainder by your video's length, and that is the bitrate that lands under the cap. Two encoding passes then make the encoder actually hit that number instead of drifting past it.

The resolution is matched to the bitrate automatically. That matters more than it sounds — the same bitrate spread across 1080p looks considerably worse than across 480p, because each pixel receives a quarter as much data. A small target on a long clip drops the resolution deliberately, and the result is sharper than a blurry 1080p would be.

What to do about longer clips

WhatsApp also re-compresses whatever you send, so arriving close to the limit means being squeezed twice. Aiming a little under — 14 MB rather than 15.9 — noticeably improves what actually reaches the other end.

    When it cannot be done

If the target is arithmetically impossible — too many minutes for too few megabytes — you are told before any encoding starts, with the minimum size that would actually work. That is more useful than watching a long encode produce something unwatchable.

    Your video is not kept

Compression runs on our server because a browser cannot transcode video at this size. The file is processed in a directory created for that one job and deleted the moment your download has been sent. Nothing is logged and no account is needed.

    Other limits

For any other number, compress to an exact size takes whatever figure you have been given.

    Common questions

What size do I need for Discord?

10 MB on the free tier, 50 MB with Nitro Basic. WhatsApp is around 16 MB and most email limits are 25 MB.

Why did it reduce my resolution?

Bitrate spread over fewer pixels looks better. A small target at 1080p is blurrier than the same target at 480p.

Will it hit the size exactly?

It lands just under, using two-pass encoding. If the target is arithmetically impossible you are told before any encoding happens.

How long can my video be?

Fifteen minutes. Transcoding runs inside a request with a fixed lifetime, so longer videos have to be trimmed first.

Can I keep the audio quality?

Audio is fixed at 96 kbps to leave the budget for video. Remove it entirely with the compress tool if you do not need it.

    Is my video stored?

No. It is deleted as soon as your download has been sent.
