Taking the soundtrack out
A video file is a container holding separate video and audio streams. Extracting the audio means copying that second stream out and writing it to its own file — a lecture you want to listen to while walking, a song from a recording, an interview to transcribe.
Which format to choose
MP3 plays on everything, which is usually the whole point. M4A uses AAC and sounds slightly better at the same bitrate — it is what the video's audio most likely already was. WAV and FLAC are lossless, so choose them for editing or archiving, and expect files roughly ten times larger.
About re-encoding
Worth understanding: a video's audio is already compressed. Extracting to MP3 decodes it and compresses it again, and each lossy step costs a little quality. It is not usually audible at 192k or above, but if you want to avoid it entirely, choose M4A — that keeps the audio in the AAC family the source almost certainly used.
Bitrate in practice
128k is fine for speech. 192k is the sensible default for music and is where most people stop hearing a difference. 320k is the ceiling for MP3 and mostly buys file size. For a podcast or lecture, 96k is genuinely enough and halves the file.
Videos without sound
If the video has no audio track, the tool says so rather than handing back a silent file — that is a surprisingly common source of confusion when a screen recording was made without capturing system audio.
Length limits
Audio extraction is cheap, so files up to two hours are accepted. That covers a feature film or a full lecture.
Common questions
Which format should I pick?
MP3 for compatibility, M4A to avoid a second lossy re-encode, WAV or FLAC for editing.
Does extracting lose quality?
A little, since the audio is decoded and re-compressed. At 192k and above it is rarely audible. M4A minimises it.
What bitrate do I need?
96k for speech, 192k for music. Above 320k is not possible in MP3 and rarely worth it.
My video has no sound.
Then there is nothing to extract, and the tool tells you rather than returning a silent file.
How long can the video be?
Up to two hours — audio work is cheap enough to allow it.
Is my video kept?
No. It is processed in an isolated directory and deleted once the download is sent.
