Which format, and why
- MP3 — plays on absolutely everything. Lossy. The safe answer when something will not accept your file.
- M4A (AAC) — better sound than MP3 at the same bitrate, and what most modern devices record. Lossy.
- WAV — uncompressed. Perfect quality, enormous files, universally supported by editing software.
- FLAC — lossless but compressed, roughly half the size of WAV with identical audio. The right choice for archiving.
- OGG — open and royalty-free, good quality, less widely supported outside browsers and games.
The rule that saves the most grief
Converting between lossy formats loses quality every time. MP3 to M4A to MP3 is worse than the original MP3, and no setting recovers it, because the discarded detail is genuinely gone.
Converting a lossy file to a lossless one does not restore anything either — you get a large file containing exactly the flaws the small one had. If you have a lossless master, convert from that rather than from an MP3 you made earlier.
Choosing a bitrate
128k is fine for speech and podcasts. 192k is the practical sweet spot for music. 320k is MP3's ceiling and the difference from 192k is subtle on most equipment. Below 96k, music starts sounding obviously thin, though voice holds up further down than people expect.
The setting is ignored for WAV and FLAC, which do not throw anything away and therefore have nothing to tune.
Video files are accepted too
Drop in a video and the audio track is converted, which makes this equivalent to extracting the audio — the same engine handles both.
Common questions
Which format is best?
MP3 for compatibility, M4A for better quality at the same size, FLAC for archiving without loss.
Will converting improve quality?
Never. Converting a lossy file to a lossless one preserves the flaws in a larger file.
What bitrate should I use?
128k for speech, 192k for music. 320k is the MP3 ceiling and the difference is subtle.
Can I convert a video file?
Yes — its audio track is converted, the same as extracting the audio.
Does bitrate matter for FLAC?
No. FLAC and WAV are lossless, so the setting is ignored.
How long can the file be?
Up to two hours.
