The one country where background colour is a legal rule

Almost everywhere in the world a passport photo background is white or light grey and that is the end of it. Indonesia is the exception, and it is the reason this page exists. The background colour of a pas foto is tied to your birth year for KTP-e, KIA and kartu kuning, and different documents fix it outright: SSCASN and CPNS want red, SKCK wants red, and various ASN and PPPK identity cards want blue. Every Indonesian applicant runs into this at least once a year, and there is no equivalent requirement for a Western tool site to have built for.

Which colour goes with which birth year

Published sources disagree, and they disagree in both directions — some say an odd birth year takes red and an even year takes blue, others say exactly the reverse, and both kinds of page look official. Guessing on your behalf would be confidently wrong for half of the people reading this, so both colours are offered and neither is picked automatically. The instruction on the form you are completing is the only source that governs your application. Read that.

Under 200 KB, which is the other half of the problem

SSCASN rejects a pas foto over 200 KB, and a decent phone photograph is ten to twenty times that. Set the maximum here and the highest JPEG quality that fits is found for you, rather than a fixed compression level that either overshoots the limit or throws away more quality than it needed to.

    Hair against a strong colour

Red and saturated blue are the two colours that show up a lazy cut-out immediately, because the pale halo left around hair is nothing like the new background. The old background colour is estimated and removed from the semi-transparent edge pixels here before the new colour goes in, so what is left is your hair rather than your hair mixed with your old wall.

    Taking the photo

Face the camera straight on in even daylight, against any plain surface — it does not need to be the final colour, since that is what is being replaced. Avoid a background that is close to your hair colour, which is the case that confuses any cut-out.

    Common questions

Which colour does my document need?

Follow the instruction on the form you are filling in. White covers India, the UK, Schengen, the US and Australia; red and blue are Indonesian pas foto colours; sky blue is common in the Philippines and parts of the Gulf.

Is red or blue right for an Indonesian pas foto?

It depends on your birth year, and published sources contradict each other about which parity takes which colour. Both are offered here. Use whichever the form in front of you specifies.

Why does my hair look strange at the edges?

Leave the edge cleaning on — it removes the old background colour from the semi-transparent pixels around hair, which is what causes a halo against a strong colour. It is on by default.

Can I get the background transparent instead?

Yes, but use the background remover for that. This tool exists specifically to produce a solid colour, because that is what document portals require.

Will it work on a photo with a busy background?

Usually, but a plain wall gives a much better cut-out. Furniture, patterned curtains and other people in the frame are what confuses it.

    Are my photos kept?

No. This one runs on our server because it uses a background-removal model, and each job runs in an isolated directory that is deleted as soon as your download is sent.
