What is actually in the file
Page count, file size, PDF version, whether it is encrypted, the page sizes it uses, how many images it embeds, which fonts it references, whether it contains form fields, and every metadata field it carries.
Nothing is modified — the file is read and then deleted.
What each answer is good for
"Why is this file so big?" — the embedded image count usually settles it. A 40 MB document with 200 images is a scan, and compression will help enormously. A 40 MB document with none is unusual and probably has embedded fonts or attachments.
"Why does it print wrong?" — the page sizes. A document mixing A4 and Letter pages prints inconsistently, and mixed orientations confuse duplex printing. Both show up immediately here.
"Why can I not edit it?" — the encrypted flag. A file can be encrypted with an empty user password, which opens without prompting while still forbidding changes, and that combination confuses people endlessly.
"Is this a scan?" — a document with images on every page and no fonts listed is a scan, and needs OCR before its text can be searched.
The metadata section
Worth reading before you forward a document. The author and producer fields fill themselves in from whoever's software made the file, and they are frequently not who you would expect.
Fonts
The font list tells you whether the document will render identically elsewhere. A PDF referencing fonts it has not embedded will substitute them on another machine, which shifts the layout.
Common questions
Does it change my file?
No, it only reads. Nothing is written, and the file is deleted immediately after.
Why is my PDF so large?
Check the embedded image count. Many images means a scan, which compresses well.
What does encrypted mean if it opens fine?
It can be encrypted with an empty user password — it opens without prompting but still forbids edits.
How do I know if it is a scan?
Images on every page and no fonts listed. Those need OCR before the text is searchable.
Why does the font list matter?
Fonts that are referenced but not embedded get substituted on other machines, which shifts the layout.
