The default nearly everywhere
White, or a very light off-white, is what Indian passports and exam boards, the UK, the Schengen area, the United States and Australia all ask for. It is also the colour people most often think they already have and do not: a photograph taken against a white wall indoors is rarely white in the file. It is grey where the wall is shadowed, warm yellow under a household bulb, and blue-grey in the shade near a window. Automated background-uniformity checks read that as a patterned background.
Replacing beats correcting
The instinct is to brighten the photograph until the wall goes white, and it is the wrong move: brightening the background brightens your face along with it, which is how people end up with washed-out passport photos. Separating you from the background and replacing the background outright leaves your face exactly as photographed.
Why white is easier than red, but not free
White is the forgiving case. The fringe left around hair by an imperfect cut-out is pale, and pale against white is close to invisible — which is why so many background removers look better than they are. It still matters when your original background was dark: cut a person out of a photograph taken against a dark blue wall, paste them onto white, and the edge of the hair carries a visible dark rim. The edge cleaning here removes the old colour from those in-between pixels rather than leaving it in the mix.
Off-white is sometimes the better answer
HM Passport Office asks for a plain cream or light grey background, not pure white, and there is a practical reason: a very pale face against pure white loses its outline, and the automated checks at some passport offices look for a detectable boundary. If your skin is light, the off-white or light grey options give a safer result than #ffffff.
What to check afterwards
A clean white background does not make a photo compliant on its own. Head size, eye line and centring all still have to be right. The ID photo checker measures those against the country you are applying to.
Common questions
Which colour does my document need?
Follow the instruction on the form you are filling in. White covers India, the UK, Schengen, the US and Australia; red and blue are Indonesian pas foto colours; sky blue is common in the Philippines and parts of the Gulf.
Is red or blue right for an Indonesian pas foto?
It depends on your birth year, and published sources contradict each other about which parity takes which colour. Both are offered here. Use whichever the form in front of you specifies.
Why does my hair look strange at the edges?
Leave the edge cleaning on — it removes the old background colour from the semi-transparent pixels around hair, which is what causes a halo against a strong colour. It is on by default.
Can I get the background transparent instead?
Yes, but use the background remover for that. This tool exists specifically to produce a solid colour, because that is what document portals require.
Will it work on a photo with a busy background?
Usually, but a plain wall gives a much better cut-out. Furniture, patterned curtains and other people in the frame are what confuses it.
Are my photos kept?
No. This one runs on our server because it uses a background-removal model, and each job runs in an isolated directory that is deleted as soon as your download is sent.
