    About AVIF

AVIF compresses better than anything else in wide use, which is why it is spreading fast across the web. Support outside browsers is still patchy, so a saved AVIF often needs converting before anything else will open it.

Expect the converted file to be noticeably larger than the AVIF you started with. That is not a fault: AVIF is simply more efficient, and you are paying in file size for compatibility.

    Converting into AVIF

Drop in JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, TIFF, GIF or BMP files and they come back as AVIF. Up to thirty at once, returned as a zip — which is the usual case, since format conversion is rarely something you need for a single file.

    Converting out of AVIF

The same tool goes the other way: drop AVIF files in and choose JPEG or PNG as the output. That is the more common direction, because the reason people arrive here is usually that something else refused to open the file.

    It runs on your device

Decoding and re-encoding happen in your browser on a canvas. Nothing is uploaded, which makes it instant and means there is no daily cap, no account and no watermark — there is no server cost to ration.

    Transparency

If your images have transparent areas, converting to JPEG will fill them with a background colour, because JPEG cannot store an alpha channel. Convert to PNG or WebP instead when the transparency matters — a logo converted to JPEG arrives with a white box around it, which is almost never what was wanted.

    Quality and file size

The quality control trades detail against size. For photographs, 88 is visually indistinguishable from the original and around 60 is where softening starts to show. For lossless formats the setting affects how hard the encoder works rather than how the result looks.

    Common questions

    Which format should I pick?

JPEG for photos, PNG for screenshots and logos, WebP as a smaller general-purpose choice for the web.

Why did my transparent background turn white?

JPEG cannot store transparency, so it is filled with your chosen background colour. Convert to PNG or WebP to keep it.

Will converting to PNG improve my JPEG?

No. You get a lossless copy of an already-lossy image — larger file, same artefacts.

    How many images at once?

Up to thirty per batch, returned as a zip.

    Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser.
