    The sideways video problem

A video filmed with the phone held one way that plays sideways on a computer is the classic case, and the cause is not what most people assume.

Phones do not usually rotate the pixels when you turn them. They record the frame as the sensor saw it and write a rotation flag into the file's metadata. Players that honour the flag show it correctly; players, editors and upload processors that ignore it show it on its side.

    What this tool does differently

It rotates the actual pixels and then clears the metadata flag. That second step matters: leaving the flag in place means a compliant player rotates our already-rotated video again, putting it back where it started. Tools that forget it are why the problem sometimes appears to get worse.

The result is a video that displays correctly everywhere, including in software that ignores metadata entirely.

Rotate and mirror are different things

Rotation turns the frame. Mirroring flips it along an axis, so text reads backwards — right for correcting a front-camera recording that came out reversed, wrong for fixing orientation.

Rotation is applied before the mirror when you use both, and that order changes the result. If it comes out unexpectedly, run the tool twice in the other order.

    Quarter turns only

90, 180 and 270 degrees rearrange pixels without resampling them. Arbitrary angles would require interpolation and would leave empty corners, which is a different operation.

    Common questions

Why does my video play sideways only in some apps?

The phone stored a rotation flag rather than rotating pixels. Some software honours it, some ignores it.

    Will this fix it everywhere?

Yes. The pixels are rotated and the metadata flag cleared, so nothing rotates it a second time.

What is the difference between rotate and flip?

Rotation turns the frame; flipping mirrors it, so text reads backwards.

Can I rotate by an arbitrary angle?

No, only quarter turns. Anything else needs interpolation and leaves empty corners.

    Does it re-encode?

The video yes, the audio no.
