Mostly this is about vertical video
Reels, Shorts and TikTok want 9:16. Almost everything is filmed 16:9. Cropping to a vertical frame is the single most common reason anyone crops a video, and the preset does it in one step — the largest 9:16 rectangle that fits, taken from the centre.
Centre-cropping is a real trade-off worth understanding: whatever was at the left and right edges is gone. If your subject is off to one side, use the custom option and set the offset yourself.
The other presets
1:1 for square feeds. 4:5 for Instagram's portrait post, which is taller than square but not full vertical. 16:9 to crop a vertical video back to widescreen. 4:3 for older displays and some presentation software.
Removing black bars
The other common reason. A video letterboxed into the wrong shape has the bars baked into the picture, and cropping is the only way to remove them. Use custom, and set the height to the visible picture area rather than the full frame.
Cropping never scales
It discards pixels rather than resampling them, so the part you keep is exactly as sharp as it was. If you then need a specific output size, resize afterwards — that second step is where quality is spent, not this one.
Audio is untouched
The soundtrack is copied through without re-encoding, so nothing is lost there at all.
Crop before you compress
Order matters if you are doing both. Cropping removes pixels outright, so compressing afterwards has less to work with and the result is both smaller and sharper than compressing first and cropping second. The same logic applies to trimming: remove what you do not need before spending quality on what you do.
Length limit
Fifteen minutes, because cropping re-encodes the video and must finish inside one request.
Common questions
How do I make a video vertical?
Choose the 9:16 preset. It takes the largest vertical rectangle from the centre of the frame.
Can I choose which part is kept?
Yes, use custom and set the left and top offsets. The presets always crop from the centre.
Does cropping reduce quality?
No. It discards pixels rather than resampling, so what remains is unchanged.
Can it remove black bars?
Yes — use custom and set the height to the visible picture area.
Is the audio affected?
No, it is copied through untouched.
