Why resize
Usually to make a file smaller, or to meet a limit somewhere. Halving the height quarters the pixel count, and file size follows fairly closely — which makes resizing a far more effective size reduction than compressing harder at full resolution, and a much better-looking one.
A 1080p video watched on a phone is genuinely indistinguishable from 720p. On a laptop the difference is slight. It only becomes obvious on a large screen, which is not where most video is watched.
Upscaling does not work, and we say so
You can select a height larger than the source, and the result will be told to you plainly: upscaling cannot add detail that was never recorded. A 480p video scaled to 2160p is a 480p video stored in far more pixels — larger, slower, and no sharper.
Genuine upscaling needs a model that invents plausible detail, which is a different kind of tool entirely and not what this is.
Aspect ratio is preserved
You choose the height and the width follows, rounded to an even number because H.264 requires it. To change the shape rather than the size, crop instead.
What the standard heights mean
1080p is the current default for most cameras and screens. 720p halves the data for very little visible cost. 480p is fine for messaging and email. 360p and below are for tight limits where getting through matters more than looking good.
The audio is untouched
It is copied straight through, so nothing is lost there.
Common questions
Will resizing make my file smaller?
Substantially. Halving the height quarters the pixel count and the file size follows closely.
Can I increase the resolution?
You can select it, but it cannot add detail. The result says so rather than pretending otherwise.
Does it change the shape?
No, the aspect ratio is preserved. Use crop to change the shape.
What resolution should I pick?
720p for most purposes — on a phone it is indistinguishable from 1080p.
Is the audio re-encoded?
No, it is copied through untouched.
