    What reversing does

The waveform is played from the end to the start. Every sample is preserved — nothing is lost — so reversing a reversed file returns you exactly to the original.

    Where it is genuinely used

Reverse cymbals and risers are a standard production technique: a crash reversed becomes the swell that leads into a chorus. Reverse reverb, where a sound is reversed, given reverb and reversed again, produces the tail that appears to arrive before the note.

Beyond music it turns up in sound design for anything meant to feel wrong, and in checking hidden-message claims, which are almost entirely the listener's brain finding patterns in noise.

    Speech reverses badly

Worth expecting: reversed speech is not simply speech backwards. Consonants have sharp attacks and soft tails, and reversing swaps them, so words become unrecognisable rather than merely inverted. It sounds alien, which is generally the point.

The length limit is lower here

Ten minutes, against two hours for other audio tools. Reversing requires the entire waveform in memory at once — you cannot begin writing the end until you have read all of it — so it costs far more memory per second than any streaming operation.

    Output

MP3 at 192 kbps. If you are reversing as part of a production chain and want no further loss, convert the result to WAV or FLAC before editing it further.

Reversing a section rather than the whole file

There is no partial option here — the whole file is reversed. To reverse just one passage, trim that section out first, reverse it on its own, and then join the pieces back together in order. That is three steps rather than one, but it is also exactly how it would be done in an editor.

    Common questions

    Does reversing lose quality?

The reversal itself is lossless. Re-encoding to MP3 costs a little; convert to WAV if it is going into an editor.

    Can I reverse it back?

Yes, reversing twice returns the original exactly.

Why does reversed speech sound so strange?

Consonants have sharp attacks and soft tails. Reversing swaps them, so words become unrecognisable rather than backwards.

Why is the length limit lower?

Reversing needs the whole waveform in memory at once, which costs far more than streaming operations.

    Does it work on video?

Not here — this reverses audio files only.
